What is Downtown Dubai?

Unlike “downtown” in many cities, Downtown Dubai is a specific neighbourhood rather than a general name for the centre. Visit Dubai, the official tourism guide, describes it as designed to be the heart of the city and built with pedestrians in mind. Its main street, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, curves through the district past cafes and shops towards Dubai Opera and Burj Park.

Landmarks in Downtown Dubai

Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa is 828m tall and opened in 2010. It was developed by Emaar Properties, and Visit Dubai lists 163 floors. Visitors can go up to two observation levels: At the Top on floors 124 and 125, and a higher deck on floor 148 at 555m. The tower stands next to Dubai Mall at 1 Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard.

Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall, opened by Emaar Properties in 2008, sits beside Burj Khalifa. As well as shops and restaurants it contains Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink, KidZania and a large cinema complex. The Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall Metro station connects to the mall by a footbridge.

The Dubai Fountain

The Dubai Fountain is set in the 30-acre Burj Lake, between Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar and Burj Khalifa. It reopened on 1 October 2025 after a five-month renovation.

  • Evening shows every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm daily.
  • Afternoon shows at 1pm and 1:30pm Saturday to Thursday, and 2pm and 2:30pm on Friday.
  • Each show lasts about five minutes and is free to watch from the promenade.
  • Paid options for a closer view include the Dubai Fountain Boardwalk and a lake ride on a traditional abra.

Dubai Opera

Dubai Opera is a performing arts venue beside The Dubai Fountain. It has capacity for 2,000 guests and can change from a theatre into a concert hall or a flat-floor space, hosting opera, ballet, orchestras, plays and comedy. Its architect, Janus Rostock, designed it to resemble a traditional dhow. The box office is open 11am to 8pm daily, and children under two are not allowed in the auditorium.

Souk Al Bahar

Souk Al Bahar sits beside The Dubai Fountain and houses restaurants with views of the lake and Burj Khalifa, including Time Out Market Dubai.

Visit Dubai also lists ARTE Museum, a digital art venue, inside Dubai Mall; see museums in Dubai for more.
