If you live in the UAE and need a Schengen short-stay visa, you apply to the consulate of the Schengen country that is your main destination, usually through that country’s visa application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Each country publishes its own checklist and appointment system, and only the consulate decides whether a visa is issued.
Visa rules, fees and procedures change. This page is general information checked against official sources on 2 October 2026; it is not advice for your situation. Always confirm with the consulate of the country you will visit, or its official visa centre, before you apply.

Which Schengen country should you apply to?
Under the EU’s common visa rules, as summarised by the European Commission, the responsible country is set by your itinerary, not by convenience:
- One country: apply to that country’s consulate.
- Several countries: apply to the country where you will spend the longest time.
- Equal time in each: apply to the country you will enter first.
You apply in the place where you are legally resident, to the consulate covering that area. For UAE residents, that means the relevant country’s embassy or consulate in the UAE, or the visa centre it uses.
Where to apply in the UAE: three examples
Every Schengen state sets its own arrangements. These three examples were checked on the consulates’ official pages on 2 October 2026.
| Country | Where applications are lodged | Notes from the official page |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | VFS Global Dubai for residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates; VFS Global Abu Dhabi for residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain | Appointment only, via a waitlist on the VFS Global site; processing can take up to 15 days |
| France | VFS Global Abu Dhabi, for residents of all seven emirates | All French visa applications in the UAE are handled by the consular section in Abu Dhabi. You fill in the form on France-Visas, print it and take it to your appointment |
| Italy | BLS International Abu Dhabi for residents of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi; residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates are directed to the Consulate General in Dubai, which uses VFS Global Dubai | The Embassy states that tourist-visa appointments in Abu Dhabi are booked through the BLS International portal |
For any other Schengen country, start from that country’s embassy website in the UAE and follow its link to the official application centre.
What documents are usually needed?
The European Commission lists these general categories:
- A valid passport that expires at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen area
- A completed visa application form
- A photograph meeting ICAO standards
- Travel medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation
- Supporting documents on the purpose of the trip, your finances, accommodation and your intention to return
- Fingerprints, taken when you submit (some people are exempt)
Consulates in the UAE add their own detail. For example, Germany’s tourism checklist for UAE residents asks for a UAE residence permit valid at least three months beyond the requested visa, medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover, personal bank statements for at least the last three months, an employer’s letter, and hotel and flight reservations. Use the checklist of the country you are applying to, as requirements differ.
How the appointment process works
- Confirm the responsible country using the main-destination rule above.
- Read that country’s official checklist on its embassy or visa-centre website.
- Complete the application form in the way the country requires (France, for example, uses the online France-Visas form).
- Book an appointment with the official visa centre. Germany uses a waitlist; France asks applicants to aim for an appointment at least three months before departure.
- Attend in person with all documents, give your fingerprints and pay the fees.
- Track your application and collect your passport once the consulate has decided.
What does it cost?
The standard Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–12, according to the European Commission page checked on 2 October 2026. Consulates in the UAE collect it in dirhams: Germany and France both say the fee is paid in AED at the consulate’s exchange rate. Visa centres charge their own service fee on top. France-Visas lists the VFS Global basic service fee in the UAE as €30.33 per application, paid online when booking and not refundable. France also states that the visa fee is kept if a visa is refused.
Can a travel agency get you a Schengen visa?
A travel agency can help you organise paperwork such as flight and hotel reservations, insurance and a well-ordered file. It cannot decide your application or speed it up. France-Visas states that visa-centre staff may not give an opinion on the quality of a file or on the outcome, that a complete file does not guarantee a visa, and that there is no fast-track procedure. Treat any promise of a guaranteed visa with caution.
If you would like help preparing your file, browse the top-rated travel agencies in Dubai and top-rated travel agencies in Abu Dhabi, and ask whether they help with Schengen applications.
